Does this offend you? A PR perspective;

Hello Lovelies!

As I was perusing over my Twitter feed, I came across the story about Ymre Stekiema and a 'controversial' photograph of her using the Bugaboo running stroller while running with her daughter.

This photograph has started a huge debate on line ranging from 'put some clothes on' to 'you go girl!', with each comment sparking new debate about the fact that she is slim and has a child.

Some claim that the negative comments come from jealous women who are not working out after having their children, and some claim that the photographs are not helping the 'target demographic' who may have softer bodies due to carrying a child.

In my opinion, the comments are not looking at all the facts here.

Firstly, her background. Stekiema is a model, which means genetically she will going to be slimmer than the average woman. She needs to look slim for her career. Her partner is also a personal trainer meaning he probably, alike most PT's in couples, encourages her to train with him. Her father is also a marathon runner and she describes herself as an avid runner.

Secondly, her daughter is two! She has probably been working out a lot over those two years post- natal and got herself back into shape. She is not trying to say 'I just had a baby and I now look like this!' because that's simply not true.

From a PR perspective, this photograph may go either way. It may inspire some mothers to start jogging and buy the product (Bugaboo running stroller) in order to run with their children. Celebrity endorsement can sometimes increase product sales because people want to become better or more like their admired celebrity for example, the sales of MAC lip liner sky-rocketed when Kylie Jenner began lining her lips. However this also may start a negative appeal, worst case scenario starting a boycott of the product until they find a 'suitable' spokesperson.

In my opinion, these photos are not offensive at all, and people need to look at the bigger picture before they start mocking and posting when they do not have the facts. All I see is a mother running with her child, but what do you see?

Let's talk ¦ Almost twenty

Hello Lovelies,

Today I thought I'd address a topic that I haven't really talked about on my blog, and that is the subject of growing up. I know I talked about what job I'd like to do in a recent post, but I never really addressed the subject that has been bothering me for a little while now.

You see, I am eighteen years old and in less than a month, I will be embarking on my last year as a teenager. This thought not only terrifies me that I will no longer be a baby but has made me start thinking about that experimental and shaping period of time that is 'your 20's'.

A J-O-B:

Getting a 9-5 job seemed so far away last year, yet now I've got to start planning little parts of my future. This includes researching what career path I wish to follow, preparing for interviews and learning what a mortgage is (I still haven't a clue) so if I get a job, I can have a roof over my head.

If I'm honest, I feel like a child playing dress up when I get invitations to PR events and when I write important emails that end 'yours sincerely'. I can't believe that I get addressed as 'Madam' when I go into a restaurant. You've grown up so much that you're no longer that little girl any more.

It's one of those changes that happen in adolescence, like when they stop giving you crayons with your spaghetti bolognese at Frankie and Benny's. It sucks.

M-A-R-R-I-A-G-E AND B-A-B-I-E-S:

This subject for me is very up and down. I love children and I would love to have them some day, but the fear is definitely there, especially the fear of having a child at such a young age.

My mother had me when she was twenty two and I'm very grateful that she did (thanks Momma!) but there's a part of me that thinks I'll still be a kid at that time, there's no way I could support a tiny human in my life. I do commend all young mothers, you're doing a brave thing that I am no way ready for.

Marriage too seems a world away for me, I mean I'd love it to happen someday but I'm not insistent on it either. If someone can put up with my shit for eternity, then fair play to him.

MY ADVICE:

There will always be that one relative who comes over to you at a wedding or a christening and says "you'll be next!" and the fear comes over you, especially if you're single. My advice is brush it off! You are your own person and you can do whatever you want.

I know now that being in your 20's does not mean you have to get married as soon as you can and start popping out children like the number balls on the national lottery.

I don't want to put a number on the time I will get all those things because planning that sort of stuff isn't healthy for your development as a person, you might not have fun because you're waiting for your 'five year plan' to kick in.

So yes guys, I'm scared for my twenties. I'm scared of growing up and looking out for myself, so I fully intend to make this last teenage year count. It's going to be a big shock to my system and I'm not ready at all, but it's the kind of fear you get as you ascend up a roller-coaster track.

Hopefully I'm in for an enjoyable ride.

10 things I'm thankful for;

Hello Lovelies!

I haven't written in a few days because I've been working but I thought I'd tell you guys ten things that I'm thankful for in my life.

1.) My Family and friends

The love and support I receive from my family and friends is insane and I couldn't live the way I do without my mom, dad, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, friends and my siblings. We fight a lot but it's made up by all the great times we share.

2.) Elliot

He's a great partner, my best friend and forever calling me out on my shit. He makes me want to achieve so much and supports me endlessly, so thanks Ell! You're a star! Here's to many more memories!

3.) My senses

The ability to use all five senses is something I have definitely taken for granted. I recently lost hearing in my left ear and when it finally unblocked, I've never felt so grateful to hear things properly again. We use our senses everyday and they help us shape our preferences, so I'm glad I can use them to their full potential.

4.) My Health

I've luckily never had a serious bout of illness in my lifetime but I know others who have. Never take good health for granted. I am so grateful that my body is healthy and happy.

5.) Showers/Baths

When you get back from a long day and you're aching, a warm shower of bath is literally heaven. Filling the bath with beautiful scents, essential oils and bubbles can make you feel like a pampered princess (or prince!).

6.) Food

Sweet things really. I am crazy for mangoes, melons and anything sweet and juicy. I'm grateful for all food that I have the pleasure of eating. I realise that some people do not have the luxury of eating like I do, so I am grateful for what I have.

7.) Autumn

The beautiful leaves, Halloween, Bonfire Night...all cold and crisp. Wearing lots of jumpers and big boots, waiting for Christmas to come! It's so calm and beautiful and I'm thankful that I get to watch it.

8.) My Birthday

My 19th is just over a month away now and I'm looking forward to it. To be celebrated by my family and friends is a lovely thought and getting to create memories is the best thing I could ask for.

9.) The little things

Cuddling someone, a mocha from Cortado, holding Elliot's hand, being walked home. All these things create perfect little memories and make my life so happy.

10.) You guys

I am so grateful for people who take time out of their lives to read this blog and share it with their friends and family. I love writing for you all and I intend to continue for a long long time.

Now I've told you what I'm thankful for, what are you thankful for?

Why I don't always write about PR:

Hello Lovelies!

Today I thought I'd address the fact that most of my writing these days doesn't revolve around Public Relations.

There are several reasons for this...

Firstly, I'm currently on my summer holidays and I'm away from university, where I hear about lots of PR opportunities on a regular basis. When I'm away I focus on other things that I think will interest my audience (if I have one).

I also have reconsidered the field of PR I actually want to go into now, because there's so many different things I'm interested in... as you know if you read my blog a lot, I focus around lifestyle, beauty, fashion and now even health. I mean I'm actually taking a liking to politics! Something I never thought I'd like! (I blame you Paula). I could never pick one to focus on now.

So yes, I'm sorry if you come to this blog thinking it's going to be nothing but PR, because it's not. I'm still figuring myself and my preferences out, and it's going to be a long journey but hey, you're welcome to join me on the ride.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you continue reading,

People can be mean;

Hello Lovelies!

Today I thought I'd address a more serious topic with you all.

In my nineteen years on this planet I have come to realise that people can be cruel, horrible, jealous, selfish and just downright awful sometimes.

I have experienced this sort of behaviour in my life multiple times and thankfully I have overcome it. Sadly, there are some people who never recover and this is for them, I guess.

In life, there is always going to be someone who wants you to hurt. Be it an ex, a family member, a friend, even someone on the street could make you feel inferior to them just because they can. As children, we pick out flaws in each other, that we didn't know existed until someone else pointed them out.

For me, this was the fact that I was a redhead, or a 'ginger' as I got labelled at the age of twelve. This mutated gene which affects thousands of the human population was suddenly an insult and I began feeling very bad about myself.

This insecurity continued subconsciously through my teens, I remember being embarrassed of my red hair and continuously dying my hair a dull brown, dark red, purple, anything but ginger.

But then one day I realised that my hair was unique and that colour was what made me feel special. I embraced my insecurity and began letting my colour show and now I even dye my hair a more vibrant red to enhance the beautiful colour I've began to love.

The message behind that anecdote is that people are mean, yes, but you can rise above and become stronger than them. You decide your own destiny, your own story is only written once and you don't want to be worrying that each chapter 'could have been better' than the last. Keep your head up and make yourself into the best person you could be.

My Summer Job:

Hello Lovelies!

Sorry I haven't written at all lately, been on hiatus for a few months as I'm on break from university and doing nothing has become a bit of a thing. I apologise for my laziness, but sometimes that is essential for a happy life....(lazy person excuse).

However, my lazy butt got itself a job for the rest of the summer at one of the West Midland's most prestigious family days out...the West Midlands Safari Park!

The role I am undertaking is a Commercial Assistant which entails selling WMSP merchandise, such as toys, guidebooks etc,. painting faces (ahh!) and other fun games.

To me, this was a great job to apply for, especially with my degree. I was extremely interested in the selling products and learning how to market for a major business, both assets towards a successful career in the PR field. I also enjoy that the target audience is so broad, and could take me down so many different routes in the leisure industry.

Any university students who are struggling to find work, make sure you follow my rules to ensure you get that job so you don't have to live off the bank of Mum and Dad.

  • Apply for everything, and I mean everything. Literally scrubbing toilets would be acceptable because it's impossible to live without a little pocket. No one is going to judge you for trying to earn some money for yourself!
  • No job is too small. Go above and beyond for your employer, especially if yo get a test shift. Not only will this make you a desirable candidate, you will also receive personal satisfaction and probably sleep like a baby because you worked so hard.
  • Babysitting isn't just for teenagers in horror films. Kids are not that bad to deal with, and parents will pay hundreds to ensure their little tykes are well looked after, and boys, you can babysit too.
  • Don't worry if you don't get the first job you applied for. Whatever happens, jump straight back on the horse. Confidence is key and with each rejection, you encourage yourself much more to succeed.

I will be documenting my work time and anything else exciting that happens to me over the next coming months, including moving back to uni and my birthday!

I'm back!

Hello Lovelies!

God, it feels so good to say that again!

I missed this! I've been so out of it for so long and it's seriously starting to make me feel bad, not writing down how I feel, I definitely needed a huge kick up the ass.

I realised how much I enjoy writing and I hope none of you have moved on to greener pastures and have waited eagerly by your laptops, praying for my return.

A lot has gone on since I went MIA, both in the fashion world and my personal life and I will be telling you all about it in time, just let me get back up to speed!

On a serious note, I am eternally grateful to the people who read this blog, who actually have decided my writing was worth it. I still have my doubts as to whether I can write or not and if anyone even takes anything away from this blog then I couldn't be happier. I've had some lovely surprises and made some decisions about my life lately and I hope you guys want to follow me on my journey.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Cya soon,

Jx

Book Review: Confessions of a shopaholic

Hello Lovelies!

I've been a bit under the weather recently and today I decided I'd venture, snot-nosed and blurry-eyed, out to do some personal errands in Liverpool. While I was there, I walked past a British Heart Foundation shop with the most beautiful display of books in the window.

Now there are three things I love in windows;
Clothes
Make up
And books.

Being the little bookworm I am, I rushed in heading straight to the book section, eying the shelves for anything that would catch my eye. Cookery books, mind and body books and then finally, the £1 book section. Where the old Mills and Boon novels my gran reads go to die.

But this £1 book section was impeccable. Shelf after shelf of humorous women's fiction, quirky characters written by women for women. I picked up Dawn French's "A tiny bit marvellous" and Camilla Morton's "How to walk in high heels" (I definitely needed that one, I'm like a baby giraffe in heels) and just as I was leaving, a title caught my eye.

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella.

I'd watched the movie and fallen in love with Rebecca Bloomwood, the ironic financial journalist with an addiction to shopping. I saw a lot of myself in her...maybe too much.

She was a 25 year old woman with serious credit card debt and while reading this book, I had a momentary fear for my future as a shopaholic. I'm only eighteen, but I was told constantly by my parents to never to get a credit card or I'd be spending money I definitely didn't have.

I'd walk past Chanel and come out in more debt than Greece. Exaggeration you say? I don't think so.

As I began reading, I started noticing patterns in her mind which had happened in mine, and although mine were sporadic, there were patterns I knew far too well.

Let's just say I got halfway through the book and start working about my savings and personal spending for the next term.

However as fictional women with rejected cards do, Ms Bloomwood indeed ends up coming out on top. But I won't spoil it for you...

If you love a girly, pick me up novel then definitely pick up this book!

It is Joanna Christofi PR Girl approved!

On another note, I am considering starting up a YouTube channel for vlogging of fashion and beauty events that I attend and different hauls and makeup tutorials. If it gets popular I may start giveaways! Let me know on my Instagram and Twitter if that's something you'd be interested in!

Again guys, thanks for reading!

Chanel Métiers D'Art Show:

Hello Lovelies!

Over the start of this month we've had some of the most important fashion shows of the year, I'm talking Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Dior and my favourite designer house Chanel's Metiers D'art which was held in Austria this year. We had already seen the hints of a new show in the Chanel film 'Reincarnation' with Pharrell Williams and Cara Delevingne in beautiful Austrian period clothing and the show did not disappoint.

The name of the show was 'Métiers D'art' which translates into 'Craftsmanship', which was the perfect name, as every piece in the collection was made of layers and intricate gold embroidery on lace and wool. Lagerfeld also incorporated high necks with ruffles which gave a royal air around the collection.

Since the show was in Salzburg this year, Lagerfeld used many Austrian traditions while adding a playfulness to the outfits with beautiful butterflies and flowers that introduced a spot of colour. My favourites included the heavy yet light coats and the beautiful ruffled dresses worn by Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne.

The venue itself was beautiful, with tables, futons and the whole place was full of candles and the whole place was perfect. I may be biased but I believe this was the best show I've seen this year - with the exception of the other Chanel shows - and it perfectly captured the trends of pre-fall 2014 in a perfect Chanel way.

I'm so jealous of every person who gets invited to a Chanel Couture show, so Karl Lagerfeld if you're reading, please send me one, please, please.

If you haven't already watched the show then here it is;

Clothes Show Live 2014;

Hello Lovelies!

Happy December!

I know I haven't posted in a while but I've been super busy because I'm moving to Liverpool next year and I've been travelling a lot back and forward.

I promise I'll never leave you again *hugs for all*

I went to the Clothes Show Live at Birmingham NEC on the 5th and it was very fun! There was so many beautiful clothes, great celebrities and some great deals on make up! I walked away with some amazing deals from Barry M including limited edition nail polishes, lip stain and eye shadow for only £10!

The whole area was full of celebrities there, mainly Made in Chelsea and TOWIE stars, including Lauren Goodger, Millie Mackintosh and even *swoons* Andy Jordan. I got a snap with him and his darling Mum, after buying a t-shirt from his surf shop Jam Industries. I recommend going to their on line store for more comfy and wearable clothing. The ASOS stores were also very stylish and surprisingly affordable.

The fashion shows themselves were a sight to behold. Multiple universities were asked to exhibit their clothes on the Image catwalk. Some of my favourites came from these catwalks and I sat through two shows in awe. Their designs were innovative, feminine and funky in all aspects and I definitely saw some of the next upcoming designers on the runway.

I definitely think that the Clothes Show should be on everyone's list for a fashionable and affordable 2015!

On another note, yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting the biggest boy band in the world - One Direction. My younger sister has had some health problems all her life and was offered some 'wishes' by the charity 'Rays of Sunshine'. So yesterday, my family and I went to London, were picked up in a limousine and taken to meet the boy band! My sister and my family are incredibly grateful for the experience and would greatly appreciate donations to the charity and thank them so much for making my sister's dream come true. I'll be posting pictures to Instagram so take a look!

Thanks for reading!

See you soon!

PR Stereotypes; Fact or Fiction?

Hello Lovelies!

First, I have some wonderful news, student PR magazine 'Behind the spin' have chosen my blog as one of the #bestPRblogs of this week! I'm the only one from Edge Hill on the list and I honestly could not contain my excitement and I am very grateful to my tutor Paula and the editor of BTS Richard Bailey for putting me in, hopefully it won't be the last time you see me in there either!

Today I thought I'd address the stereotypes that this world have deemed acceptable to be used when referring to the occupation of a PR.

People in my university are studying subjects that they deem are 'harder' than my course. I disagree that my course is not challenging because it is! Multiple deadlines, terminology and vocational skills are present, and I think people think I do nothing at all towards my degree. I work hard at my course in order to get the best possible grade I can and I am sure the people studying subjects like Criminology and Psychology also study like I do in order to achieve. Regardless of what course we do, we all got into university and deserve our places.

Okay, rant over. Over to the stereotypes of PR.

PR people just throw parties...
False. PR is about creating a positive public image for a client or company. You need to have many more skills than just being able to throw together a party such as damage control, reporting and liaising with journalists.

PR people drink copious amounts of coffee...
False..ish. I myself have a beautiful relationship with a Starbucks soy mocha latte that no one, not even me, understands. But not all the PR pros are addicted to caffeine.

PR is a female profession...
Nope. This is based on the fact that most of the PR practitioners are female. It's definitely not a girl's profession just as being a soldier or a firefighter is not just a male profession. Men are welcomed into this profession with open arms!

PR people are liars...
False or True...you'll never know. Some people believe that PR people are definite liars and use their 'spin doctor' ways to promote mass corporations. Personally, this has never really occurred to me that they are liars, just there to do a job.

Working in PR is just like Samantha Jones in 'Sex and the city'...
False. I absolutely adored Samantha in SATC and if I'm completely honest, her influence is what made me research public relations in more depth. It wasn't because of the parties, it was more about the control she possessed over any situations during an event and social skills wonderfully portrayed by Kim Catrall that really made me wonder about the wonderful, wonderful career choice. So no, it's not just like Samantha, it's 100% better.

There's a few stereotypes I think really made me raise my eyebrow. I hope this helped any students who are still unsure about this career. My advice is to do lots of research on the career and be 100% sure on what you want to do. This career is hard work but also has some amazing perks!

Thank you for reading, I'll see you soon!

Secrets of the PR girl

Hello Lovelies!

I thought today I'd address the question I get asked most regularly;

"Why did you choose PR?"

A very good question, and to answer it I thought I'd use someone else's opinions, since you're probably sick of me gabbing on about myself!

So I decided to put my PR hat on and conduct some interviews on my lovely and fashionable PR girls who I have the pleasure of working with at Edge Hill. So here's some interviews I conducted with my lovelies Holly, Beth and Lore.

So girls, what made you want to work in Public Relations?

B: I used to work in a outdoor shop at home, so I had to keep thinking of ways to keep people interested. Personally, I think that I just love the idea of creating something that the public will enjoy. I also like the social media aspect.

H: Same, I worked in a PR consultancy back home, called Cream Consultancy and they taught me a lot, so I thought I'd become more qualified and get a degree.

L: I didn't even know what it was, but my Dad mentioned it, saying that I'd be really good at it. So I decided to research it and fell in love.

I always wanted to be doing something different and interesting everyday! What kind of PR do you want to go into?

H: I think I want to be an all-rounder! I enjoy all the sectors of PR and would love to be part of all of them.

B: I'm currently still undecided! There's so many different branches of PR to go into, I'm leaning towards events PR but I'm still choosing.

L: It's between celebrity and consumer PR. I wouldn't mind b2b either, but politics is a big fat no.

It's amazing how many different ways we could go with this degree! Right now, here's some fashion questions! What's your favourite clothing shop and why?

L: That's hard! I LOVE Zara but I can't always afford it. I also really like UniQlo and H&M which are way more affordable.

H: I think New Look is my favourite because it's affordable on student budget and it's still fashionable!

B: I have two favourites. Forever 21 and Jack Wills. Jack Wills for the classy, traditional feel of the clothing and Forever 21 for its edgy hidden gems you can find in there! AND it's reasonably priced!

Interesting that all of us have such different tastes isn't it? Okay, what's your favourite trend that's emerged this winter?

B: Those high neck polo jumpers are the best! And I love the colours that are in right now, especially the greens and the burgundy! Winter is just my favourite because I love chunky knits!

L: My ideal winter outfit would to be a black polo neck jumper, black or dark brown cotton bottoms- I love to be comfortable - knee high boots and a fur coat.

H: I went to New Look the other day and bought a gorgeous pair of ripped skinnies! They're everywhere!

Thanks for those girls, now last question...any advice for the kids who might be studying PR in the upcoming years?

L: Be prepared to write about things you don't want to write about - but always do it the best you can!

B: I'd probably say that you shouldn't leave assessments to the last minute! Make time for them, and work hard so you can play hard with your friends!

H: I'm gonna be the cheesy one and say follow your dreams and be ambitious and you'll get there!

Thanks guys!

Hopefully the girls have given you some help and you still want to study PR! The girls will be featured in my posts again so you can get to know them better!

Thank you for reading and I'll see you soon!

Ten tips for student style;

Hello Lovelies!

This is a celebration post as I've just submitted my first assignment! I feel like a wave of achievement is washing over me and I'm feeling good so I thought I'd give you ladies and gents some of my wisdom.

Since I'm a student with a love of expensive clothes, life at uni has not been easy. Dragging myself away from shop windows and begging for a 100% off sale to Dorothy Perkins seems to be all I do these days.

And if anyone actually reads this blog and you're a student with a spending problem too, maybe I can shed a little light on the dark secrets of the 'budget buyer'.

1.) Take a look in a charity shop. I know most people who wear charity shop clothes are usually grannies or hippies but if you search hard enough, I can guarantee there will be something that makes rifling through old jumpers worthwhile. I mean, I found a Laura Ashley blazer under a load of old coats once...just saying

2.) Use your make up sparingly. I am literally the worst with make up. I love wearing it and sometimes when I'm bored I'll do a full face because I fancy taking a shameless selfie. So cut back a bit, let your skin breathe and embrace your natural beauty.

3.) Look through your wardrobe. I know this sounds silly but hear me out! Have you ever looked through your wardrobe and found clothes you didn't even know existed anymore? I can't even count how many times I've fallen into my wardrobe and found a skirt that I thought had long gone extinct. I think you should take a look, especially before buying anything new.

4.) Beg, borrow but don't steal. If you've got friends that are the same size as you, like I do, borrow their clothes! Everyone's style is different and most of the time you can get a really beautiful piece of clothing from a friend. Just as long as you return it.

5.) Make investment purchases. Don't just buy that skirt because 'oooh it's so cute'. You've gotta be a tactical shopper as a student, make sure that you are thinking 'What will this go with?' constantly. For example, if buying a new top, will it go with skirts? Trousers? Shorts? and is it the right colour?

6.) Avoid the expensive places. MAC, Jo Malone, and all the beautiful places that makes you slightly queasy when you check the price tag. I know I went to MAC recently, but I'm weak and I'm trying to save you lovely people from my mistakes. I'm a guinea pig who spends all her money. Word to the wise, don't go to the metquarter in Liverpool if you're on a budget...you may never eat again.

7.) Create your own. If you're a little creative whiz why not customize some old clothes and make them fancy? And if you're not, you could stick on a youtube video and easily learn how to embellish, hem and bedazzle any clothing you want.

8.) Don't forget to budget! I know it's tempting to spend your entire student loan when it comes in. I know people who booked holidays and are now living on beans. Don't be that person! Set yourself limits on how much you want to spend on clothing, make up and accessories a week and stick to it! You'll thank me later!

9.) Try to only buy necessities. It will help you save money instead of spending it on rubbish like scented nail polish (which I have done - it didn't even smell like melon).

10.) Feel fabulous, look fabulous. Honestly, this is important. Being a student really messes with your sleeping, eating and drinking patterns. You will find yourself eating at 3am and sleeping till 3pm. But you've got to try and fight it! If you've got a lecture at 9am and you're falling asleep at 7am, you're not gonna feel good or learn anything. So try to sleep well, eat well and get plenty of exercise - it'll make you feel unstoppable!

So there you have it, my top ten tips on being a stylish student!

Good luck, thanks for reading and I'll see you next time!
